Can You Get Law Admission Without an Entrance Exam in 2027?
Yes, but you have fewer options than most online lists suggest. Many "without entrance" lists include colleges that actually run their own tests.
Some public universities, and a few private ones, fill law seats on academic merit. Most well-known law schools still depend on CLAT, AILET, CUET or their own university test.
The examples below are from 2026 admission notices. Rules can change, so always check the official 2027 notice before you apply.
"No CLAT" and "no entrance exam" are not the same thing. Here is how the main admission routes differ:
| Admission Route | Entrance Exam | Selection Basis |
| Merit-based | Not required | Class 12 or graduation marks |
| Without CLAT | May be required | University-level test (e.g. PU UGLAW, CUCET, ULSAT) |
| CLAT-based | CLAT required | CLAT score or rank |
| Interview-based | Depends on university | Academic record + personal interview |
After Class 12, the main law courses are the 5-year integrated programmes: BA LLB, BBA LLB and B.Com LLB. Graduates can apply for the 3-year LLB. At some universities the 3-year LLB is filled on graduation merit or through an interview, even where the 5-year course needs a test.
These examples are based on published 2026 admission information:
Students looking for law admission without CLAT in Chandigarh should know that the main Tricity institutes mostly use their own entrance tests:
For law admission in Punjab in 2027 without any test, the main route is the GNDU-run centralised counselling, which covers colleges across the state.
5-year LLB: you need to have passed Class 12 in any stream. The minimum percentage and category relaxation depend on BCI rules and each university's notification. Punjab Law Admissions 2026, for example, required 45% for the general category, 42% for OBC and 40% for SC/ST. Many private universities set higher cut-offs.
3-year LLB: you need a bachelor's degree in any discipline, with the minimum marks set by the university.
Before applying, confirm the college's current eligibility rules, recognition and affiliation, and whether the programme is approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI).
A typical merit-based admission works like this:
Fees change every session, and figures on third-party websites often don't match. So this guide doesn't quote unverified tuition amounts. Use official sources instead:
| College / Route | Where to Find Official Fee Information |
| Punjab Law Admissions (GNDU counselling) | Counselling fee in 2026: ₹2,600 (₹1,300 for SC/ST). Tuition is set by each participating college. |
| UPES, Dehradun | Current programme fee on the UPES admissions portal |
| Amity Law School, Noida | Latest programme fee in the Amity prospectus |
| Chandigarh University | Official programme fee and CUCET scholarship details |
Also ask whether scholarships or fees differ by admission category, and read the refund policy before you pay.
Yes. Merit-only seats are limited, and cut-offs can be high. Most established law schools, including the NLUs, UILS and AIL, admit students through entrance tests.
Preparing for CLAT 2027 (6 December 2026, according to the CLAT 2027 official examination schedule), PU UGLAW or CUET keeps these options open. You can still apply through merit routes as a backup.
